Layout Inspiration

Since I want to create a zine as my self promotional item, I thought it was important to look into the latest trends within layout and magazine design to make sure that I maintain a higher standard as possible when creating my own piece.

A really good example when it comes to clean and simple layouts that work, is with CRACK magazine. They use a great balance of white space with imagery and text, and use great fonts. There's always a good theme with their layouts and are definitely a big inspiration for me, magazine layout wise. Due to the nature of my zine, I imagine I'll be using a lot of white space with large images to allow for the focal point to be on my work.

Notion Magazine is a national magazine that I think has some really great design. By maintaining a few fonts and keeping everything very structured, they've developed a really nice layout design that works throughout the magazine for many different articles. Notion is a big inspiration for me when designing layouts and I've always thought it's a great magazine to aspire to.

Little White Lies is a London based film magazine that each month centres it's design around a particular film that's up and coming. The issue featured above is based around the film Shame which is about the life of a sex addict. However, despite a constantly changing theme within the magazine, the design that's used is maintained at a very high standard and is definitely something to aspire to. The LWL team is known for integrating a whole number of different practices in their design process to create the desired results, such as illustration, photography etc.
