Bookbinding Inspiration

A selection from past WBL blogs...

Another great artist I found through some quick google searches for good self promotion. His name is Mark Soetantyo and he's got, not only a great self promotional poster and pack, but a really nice amount of work to back it up. A nice artist to inspire to.

This is a really nice creative CV that I found online by Effektive Studio on their move to Sydney from Glasgow. It contains an A2 poster and an A5 booklet and is a really nice way to introduce yourself and sell yourself to a client. I know that if I recieved this, I would be very impressed!

This was one of the self promotion packs that I found through the website before. However, I wanted to show more pictures of this one since the design and colours were really nice. This is something that I'd definitely like to end up with one day that could be a real example of how good my work is, and would definitely sell me to clients.

Layout Inspiration

Since I want to create a zine as my self promotional item, I thought it was important to look into the latest trends within layout and magazine design to make sure that I maintain a higher standard as possible when creating my own piece.

A really good example when it comes to clean and simple layouts that work, is with CRACK magazine. They use a great balance of white space with imagery and text, and use great fonts. There's always a good theme with their layouts and are definitely a big inspiration for me, magazine layout wise. Due to the nature of my zine, I imagine I'll be using a lot of white space with large images to allow for the focal point to be on my work.

Notion Magazine is a national magazine that I think has some really great design. By maintaining a few fonts and keeping everything very structured, they've developed a really nice layout design that works throughout the magazine for many different articles. Notion is a big inspiration for me when designing layouts and I've always thought it's a great magazine to aspire to.

Little White Lies is a London based film magazine that each month centres it's design around a particular film that's up and coming. The issue featured above is based around the film Shame which is about the life of a sex addict. However, despite a constantly changing theme within the magazine, the design that's used is maintained at a very high standard and is definitely something to aspire to. The LWL team is known for integrating a whole number of different practices in their design process to create the desired results, such as illustration, photography etc.

Self Promotional Inspiration

This is a really good example of a sorted graphic designer's self promotional kit. Including your resume, business cards, stickers and a little treat 'to sweeten the deal' is something that works really well. To have such a solid identity within the mailer is something that's really important as well since it shows a lot of experience and knowledge on the designer's part on how good he/she is as a designer as well as his or her passion for the work they do.

This artist has decided to go along the lines of creating a gimmick, similar to that of Willy Wonka's Golden Ticket ideas as a way of promoting her services as well as offering a discount along with the 'golden ticket'. She's used the packaging as a way of showing what she's capable of doing, creating and what skills she has, all in a neatly designed little package. This is something that I personally would probably avoid, however, it's a good example of of how to do it right should you go down that road.

I wanted to point out this particular kit of self promotional material for one reason in particular. The wax stamp is something that is an incredibly subtle, but very professional touch. If money was no object, to create something like this would be a great way of making a good impression. Along with a solid amount of content with business cards and creative resumes for example, this would certainly be a self promotional pack I'd look at twice.

This is a really interesting little piece of self promotion. The boomerang has been made by hand and holds a significance for the designer for many reasons. Giving a handmade item as a gift in a mailer is something that I think can only ever be a good thing since everyone loves something for free. I think having something handmade rather than sweets for example is good since it allows the potential employer to see what your interests are through what you decide to make for them.

This is a rad example of something cheap and cheerful made into a great item of self promotion. From a student's point of view, it's important to maintain a budget when working on different projects so to take something cheap, but with the potential of looking very professional and interesting, is an instant win! This is a really cute example of a self promotional item and definitely an inspiration to look closer at items, and see whether or not they have the potential of becoming a great self promotional gift.
